Martin J. “Marty” Hughes received the 2024 Diane G. Snell Humanitarian Award. Born and raised in Amsterdam, Marty graduated from the Mortuary Science Program at HVCC in 1995. Marty joined the Amsterdam Kiwanis Club with his brother, Mark. He joined the Amsterdam Elks #101, serving as the Soccer Shoot Chairman for the past 17 years. He was secretary for the Horace J. Inman Senior Center Board for 6 years, and helped spearhead the revitalization of the Center. In 2016, Marty joined the local United Way Board. He enjoys volunteering for several local annual fundraisers. Marty was Region 6 Representative for the NYS Funeral Directors Association Board for two years. He is active on the Veterans Time to Thrive Fundraising Committee, working to achieve the dream of a Veterans Housing Complex in Amsterdam. Marty coached his children’s softball and baseball teams, was secretary of the AHS Football Booster Club, and a member of the AHS Marching Rams Booster Club. Marty has also dealt with personal devastating loss. His brother, Mark, was diagnosed with cancer at 33, and succumbed to the disease in 2005. In 2011, Marty lost his father to lung cancer, and in 2018, lost his mother to bladder cancer. Shortly after her passing, Marty endured one of his most challenging tasks as a funeral director: caring for many of the victim’s involved in the 2018 Schoharie limo crash. These people were friends he had known over the years. He is honored and humbled that he and his partner, Peter Rose, were chosen to care for them and carry out their families’ final wishes. In 2009 and 2010, he was named the top funeral director, ranked #1, with Graystone Associates for customer satisfaction. He has been nominated for several awards with the Chamber of Commerce, and in 2014, he received the Healing Hands of Hospice Award. Most recently, Marty has joined his friend and colleague, Peter Rose, by purchasing the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, now named Rose & Hughes Funeral Home.
