You may be eligible for VA compensation.
Contact your local Veterans Service Agency at (518) 853-8152 to speak with a Veterans Service Officer.
Do you already receive VA military compensation? If so, you MUST report your VA monthly compensation as income when applying for Social Services (HEAP, SNAP, Medicaid, etc.) If you fail to report your VA compensation on your Social Services application, you could be faced with fraud charges. Your DSS worker will let you know what is reportable as income.
To request a copy of your VA compensation Award Letter for proof of income, you or your legal designee should:
- Call 1-800-827-1000
- Listen & hold until you hear “Press 0 for an agent”
- Press 0 and wait for an agent to answer.
- Let the agent know you need a copy of your Award Letter & it will be mailed to you within 10 days.
IF you have deductions withheld from your VA compensation such as child support, VA garnishment, etc., then let the agent know you need an 08-20 Service Request Award Letter showing monthly amount & your deductions. If you are unsure if you have deductions withheld, then request the 08-20 Service Request Award Letter to be sure. If you are certain you have no deductions withheld from your monthly VA compensation, you may provide a copy of your bank statement showing your monthly VA direct deposit. But, if you have deductions, you must report them on your Social Services application, so request the 08-20.
